MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK WIFI Overview
The MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK WIFI is a full-size ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM4 platform, built on the B550 chipset and introduced by MSI in September 2026 as a refresh of the B550 TOMAHAWK. It pairs a PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot and a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot with 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, plus a rear USB 10Gbps Type-C port and a Flash BIOS button.
It is aimed at Philippine buyers building or upgrading a Ryzen 5000 or Ryzen 3000 system on DDR4, people who want built-in Wi-Fi without buying a separate card, and AM4 owners replacing an older or more basic board while keeping their CPU and RAM. Note the name carefully: this is the MAG B550 TOMAHAWK WIFI, a different model from the MAG B550 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI and the original MAG B550 TOMAHAWK, which have different specifications.
Key Features and What They Mean
PCIe 4.0 Where It Matters
The main x16 slot and the first M.2 slot (M.2_1) both run from the CPU at PCIe 4.0, so a current graphics card and a Gen4 NVMe SSD get full bandwidth. M.2_1 also accepts long 22110 drives and SATA M.2 drives. The second M.2 slot (M.2_2) and the other expansion slots come from the B550 chipset and run at PCIe 3.0. In our assessment that split is fine for most builds: put the boot and game drive in M.2_1 and use M.2_2 for bulk storage, where PCIe 3.0 speed is rarely the bottleneck.
Lane Sharing to Know Before Adding Cards
MSI states that when M.2_2, PCI_E2 and PCI_E3 are all populated, PCI_E3 becomes unavailable and M.2_2 drops to PCIe x2. Most gaming builds never hit this, but anyone planning a second SSD plus a capture card or network card should map out which slots they will use.
Memory: DDR4 With EXPO Support
Four DDR4 slots support up to 128GB in dual channel. MSI lists overclocked speeds up to 5100+ MHz with one single-rank module per channel, dropping to 3600+ MHz with two dual-rank modules per channel. MSI also lists AMD EXPO support alongside A-XMP. For most Ryzen 5000 builds, a two-stick DDR4 3200 or 3600 kit is a sensible match, and the high OC figures matter mainly to enthusiasts tuning memory.
Networking: 2.5G LAN and Wi-Fi 6E
The Realtek 8125B 2.5G LAN covers wired connections, and a Wi-Fi 6E module comes pre-installed in the M.2 Key-E slot, with antenna connectors on the rear panel. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band on top of 2.4GHz and 5GHz, but MSI notes that 6GHz use depends on Windows 11 support and on each country’s regulations, and it also needs a 6E-capable router. On a regular Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 home router, the board still connects on 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
USB, Video Outputs and Quality of Life
The rear panel has USB 10Gbps Type-C and Type-A ports, two USB 5Gbps ports and two USB 2.0 ports, and internal headers add a front USB 5Gbps Type-C port for cases that have one. HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs work only with processors that have integrated graphics, such as the Ryzen 5000 G-Series. The Flash BIOS button and four EZ Debug LEDs are practical extras: the debug LEDs show whether the CPU, memory, VGA or boot stage is holding up a build that will not post.
Competitive Positioning
In our view, the TOMAHAWK WIFI sits in the upper-middle tier of B550 boards. Its feature list goes beyond a basic board with 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E, a rear 10Gbps Type-C port, four system fan headers plus two pump headers, and the Flash BIOS button. It does not chase flagship features: storage tops out at two M.2 slots and four SATA ports, and the second M.2 and chipset slots stay on PCIe 3.0.
Launch coverage from Guru3D and IT Home notes what changed from the original B550 TOMAHAWK: SATA ports drop from six to four, the dual LAN setup becomes a single 2.5G port, and Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3 is added. Guru3D also called the 5Gbps front USB-C header an unusual compromise for a refreshed board, and described the 8+2+1 power delivery as more restrained than flagship AM4 boards but adequate for suitably configured Ryzen processors. For most single-GPU builds with one or two M.2 SSDs, the reduced SATA and LAN count will not matter; for someone moving several SATA drives or wanting two wired network ports, it does.
The bigger decision is platform. AM4 with DDR4 is an older platform than AMD’s current AM5, so this board makes the most sense when the buyer already owns or wants a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 processor and DDR4 memory. A buyer starting fresh with no parts to reuse should also price out an AM5 build before deciding.
Philippine Buyer Perspective
Our Take
What stands out is how complete the package is for an AM4 build: PCIe 4.0 for the GPU and main SSD, 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth on board, plenty of fan headers for a well-ventilated case, and debug LEDs that save time when troubleshooting. For a Philippine home where the PC sits far from the router, built-in Wi-Fi removes the need for a separate adapter, and the extra fan headers help in rooms without air conditioning where good case airflow matters.
The trade-offs are clear. Four SATA ports is a modest count for builders with several hard drives, PCIe 3.0 on the second M.2 slot is slower than the first, and AM4 is not where AMD’s newest processors are going. We see it as a strong fit for a Ryzen 5000 build or an AM4 upgrade where the CPU and DDR4 memory carry over, and a weaker fit for someone buying every part new.
One caution on research: MSI’s own overview page for this board shows some figures that differ from its specification table, such as the SATA count and Bluetooth version. The specifications on this page follow MSI’s specification table, which MSI’s US store listing and launch press coverage also match (4 SATA ports, Bluetooth 5.3).
Known Compatibility and Setup Notes
MSI lists Windows 11 64-bit as the supported operating system and advises checking msi.com for the newest CPU support status as new processors are released. The board is a standard ATX size at 243.84 × 304.8mm, so it needs an ATX-capable case.
