Product Overview
The AMD Ryzen 5 5500F is a six-core, twelve-thread Zen 3 desktop processor for the AM4 socket, launched by AMD on September 10, 2026. This is the tray version (100-000001905): you get the processor only, with no retail box and no CPU cooler. It has no integrated graphics, so it is meant for builds that already have, or will get, a dedicated graphics card.
Its appeal is simple. A lot of existing gaming and office PCs are built on AM4 with DDR4 memory, and with DDR5 memory still expensive (a point Hardware Busters makes at launch), staying on DDR4 keeps an upgrade affordable. The 5500F gives those systems a current-production six-core chip with PCIe 4.0 and a 4.4 GHz boost clock, without forcing a move to a new motherboard and new memory.
Key Features and What They Mean
Six Zen 3 cores with a 4.4 GHz boost
AMD rates the 5500F at a 3.0 GHz base clock and up to 4.4 GHz boost, with 3 MB of L2 and 16 MB of L3 cache. Six cores and twelve threads are still the comfortable middle for 1080p gaming, streaming a match to friends, and everyday office and school work running side by side. The chip is unlocked, so Ryzen Master and motherboard tuning are available on boards that allow it.
Chiplet design with PCIe 4.0
AMD lists the 5500F under the Vermeer codename with two dies on the package (a 7nm compute die and a 12nm I/O die) and PCIe 4.0 with 20 usable lanes. That matters because the older Ryzen 5 5500 is a monolithic design limited to PCIe 3.0, as both Club386 and TweakTown point out. On a B550 or X570 board, the 5500F can run a Gen4 NVMe SSD and a modern graphics card at full PCIe 4.0 link speed.
No integrated graphics
The F suffix means AMD lists a discrete graphics card as required. There is no display output from the motherboard ports with this CPU. If the plan is to run the PC first and add a graphics card later, this is the wrong chip; an AM4 APU such as a Ryzen G-series model is the safer choice.
Tray packaging: bring your own cooler
The boxed version (100-100001905BOX) ships with AMD’s Wraith Stealth cooler. This tray unit does not, so budget for a CPU cooler. With a 65W TDP, in our assessment a basic single-tower air cooler is enough, and it usually runs quieter than a small stock cooler, which helps in a warm Philippine room without aircon. Thermal paste is not included with a tray CPU either, unless your cooler comes with it pre-applied.
DDR4 memory support
The memory controller supports dual-channel DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s and up to 128 GB. AMD rates two single-rank or two dual-rank modules at DDR4-3200, while four modules drop the rated speed to DDR4-2933 (single-rank) or DDR4-2667 (dual-rank). For most gaming builds, a two-stick 16 GB or 32 GB DDR4-3200 kit is the sensible pairing. ECC memory works only if the motherboard supports it.
Competitive Positioning
The 5500F sits at the entry level of AMD’s desktop line. Against the Ryzen 5 5500 it replaces, the differences are the higher boost clock (4.4 GHz versus 4.2 GHz) and PCIe 4.0. Early gaming tests by RandomGaminginHD, reported by Club386 and TweakTown, paired it with a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB at 1080p and found the 5500F up to 16% faster than the 5500 in Battlefield 6, and about 8% to 11% faster in Counter-Strike 2, GTA V Enhanced and Cyberpunk 2077. In GPU-limited games such as Forza Horizon 6 there was no meaningful difference. These are early results from one tester, so treat them as a direction rather than a final verdict.
Against the Ryzen 5 5600 class, the main trade-off is cache. Guru3D notes that the 5500F has 16 MB of L3, half of the 32 MB on the Ryzen 5 5600, and reviewers see the smaller cache as the reason 5500-class chips trail the 5600 series in CPU-heavy games. Moving up to AM5 brings DDR5 and a newer upgrade path, but also a new motherboard and new memory, which is exactly the cost the 5500F lets an AM4 owner avoid.
Philippine Buyer Perspective
Our Take
In our assessment, the 5500F makes the most sense as an upgrade for an existing AM4 PC, especially one still running a Ryzen 1000, 2000 or 3000 series chip, or as the CPU in a budget 1080p gaming build where most of the money goes to the graphics card. The PCIe 4.0 support is a real step up over the Ryzen 5 5500 when paired with a B550 or X570 board and a Gen4 SSD.
Two things are easy to overlook. First, because it is a tray unit, the total cost includes a cooler. Second, it was launched in September 2026, so older AM4 motherboards will only run it after a BIOS update that adds support. Buyers who need display output without a graphics card, or who want the strongest AM4 gaming chip, should look at an AM4 APU or a 32 MB cache Ryzen 5 5600 class processor instead.
Known Compatibility and Setup Notes
Who Should Buy This
Owners of an older Ryzen on a B450, B550 or X570 board who want six Zen 3 cores and keep their DDR4 memory, after confirming BIOS support.
Builders putting most of the budget into a dedicated graphics card and pairing it with a B550 board, DDR4-3200 and a Gen4 NVMe SSD.
Anyone who already owns or prefers an aftermarket air cooler or AIO and does not need the boxed Wraith Stealth.
