The ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI is a micro-ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM5 platform, built on the B850 chipset. It gives Ryzen 9000 and 7000 builds a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot and a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, plus four DDR5 slots, 2.5Gb LAN and Wi-Fi 6E, all on a 24.4 cm square board for compact micro-ATX cases.
This is the Wi-Fi 6E version. ASUS also sells a TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI7 and a white WIFI7 W edition, which are different models, so check the full name when comparing listings.
Key Features and What They Mean
PCIe 5.0 where it counts
With a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 processor, the top x16 slot runs at full PCIe 5.0 x16 and the first M.2 slot (M.2_1) runs at PCIe 5.0 x4. In our assessment that covers the two upgrades most AM5 owners will actually make over the life of the board: a newer graphics card and a faster NVMe SSD. The other two M.2 slots are PCIe 4.0 x4, which is plenty for game libraries and secondary drives.
Memory: four slots, up to 256GB
ASUS lists support for up to 256GB of DDR5 across four DIMM slots, with EXPO and ASUS AEMP profiles and overclocked speeds of 8000+ MT/s. Reaching those speeds depends on the CPU and the kit; for a typical two-stick gaming build, an EXPO kit from the ASUS memory support list is the safe route. ECC un-buffered DIMMs are also supported.
Connectivity for a desk without long cables
Networking is Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet plus 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, so a build can go online without a separate adapter. ASUS notes that the 6GHz band depends on local regulations and needs Windows 11 or later; on 2.4GHz and 5GHz the board works like any Wi-Fi 6 card. The rear panel carries 12 USB ports, led by a 20Gbps Type-C port, and the front headers add a 10Gbps Type-C connector for cases that have one.
Cooling and power headers
There are six 4-pin fan headers: CPU, CPU OPT, a dedicated AIO pump header and three chassis fan headers. That is enough for a 240mm or 360mm AIO plus case fans without splitters in most mATX cases. Two 8-pin CPU power connectors are provided; in practice many mainstream Ryzen builds connect one, and the second gives headroom for higher-power processors.
Build-friendly details
The I/O shield is pre-mounted, M.2 drives lock in with Q-Latch instead of tiny screws, and a Q-Release design helps free a long graphics card from the x16 slot in a cramped case. Q-LEDs for CPU, DRAM, VGA and boot device point to where a failed first boot is stuck, and the BIOS FlashBack button lets you update the firmware from a USB drive.
Competitive Positioning
This board sits in the mainstream segment of AM5: above A620 and entry B650 boards, below X870 boards. Compared with older B650 mATX boards, the B850 generation is defined around PCIe 5.0 support, and here both the graphics slot and the main M.2 slot get it. Compared with the full-size TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI, you give up expansion room in exchange for a smaller case. Its WIFI7 sibling uses Wi-Fi 7 instead of Wi-Fi 6E (check that model’s own specification for any other differences); in our assessment, buyers on wired LAN or a router without Wi-Fi 7 lose little with the 6E version.
What it does not offer: a debug code display (it uses Q-LEDs), a PS/2 port, or more than one full-length PCIe slot. Builders planning a second card or a capture card that needs more than x1 should look at an ATX board instead.

Our Take
In our assessment this is a sensible default board for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 7700 gaming build in a micro-ATX case. The VRM and M.2 heatsinks, six fan headers and AIO pump header suit Philippine rooms that run warm when the aircon is off, provided the case has decent airflow. Built-in Wi-Fi 6E is useful in condos and boarding houses where running a LAN cable to the desk is not practical.
Who should buy something else: owners of Ryzen 8000G APUs who want full PCIe lanes (those processors run the x16 and M.2 slots at reduced width, per ASUS), builders who need multiple expansion cards, and anyone who has already settled on Wi-Fi 7, who should pick the WIFI7 version.
Known Compatibility and Setup Notes
Required: With Ryzen 8000 Series processors, the x16 slot runs at PCIe 4.0 in x8/x4 mode, M.2_1 drops to PCIe 4.0 x4 and M.2_2 to PCIe 4.0 x4/x2, per the ASUS specification. RAID support also varies by CPU series.
Recommended: Check the ASUS CPU support list for the BIOS version your processor needs, especially for CPUs released after the board launched. The BIOS FlashBack button makes the update possible from a USB drive.
Recommended: Attach the included ASUS WiFi Q-Antenna for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Keep it with the board; it is part of the package.
Possible consideration: There is no PS/2 port on the rear panel, so very old keyboards need a USB adapter. The 6GHz Wi-Fi band requires Windows 11 or later.
