FSP VIC WD 550W and 650W: A Compact, No-Frills ATX Power Supply
The FSP VIC WD is an entry-level, non-modular ATX power supply sold in two wattages here: the VIC-550WD and the VIC-650WD. Both carry 80 PLUS 230V EU Standard certification, a single +12V rail, a 120mm HDB fan, a short 140mm body and FSP’s 3-year warranty. It is aimed at office PCs, school and home desktops, and budget gaming builds that need dependable power from a known PSU maker rather than premium features.
Both models share the same black housing, the same black embossed cable set and the same dimensions. The only difference is output: the 550W unit delivers up to 504W on +12V, the 650W unit up to 588W. That +12V figure is the one that matters, because the CPU and graphics card draw almost all of their power from it.
Key Features and What They Mean
80 PLUS 230V EU Standard Certification
The VIC WD is certified under the 230V EU program of 80 PLUS, at the Standard level. This is the entry tier of 80 PLUS, the one shown with a white badge, and it sits below Bronze. FSP rates the unit at 85% or higher efficiency at typical load. The 230V EU test is a sensible fit for the Philippines, where wall outlets supply 220V, much closer to the EU test voltage than the 115V North American test.
Some online listings call this unit “80+ White”. That refers to the certification badge, not the color. The VIC WD housing and cables are black.
Single +12V Rail and DC to DC Design
All of the +12V capacity sits on one rail: 42A / 504W on the VIC-550WD and 49A / 588W on the VIC-650WD. A single rail means you do not have to think about which connector draws from which rail. FSP also uses a DC to DC module to derive the +5V and +3.3V outputs, a design that keeps the minor rails steadier when the +12V load changes, which is what happens when a game starts or a render kicks in.
The +3.3V and +5V rails are rated 16A each with a combined 100W limit. That is plenty for modern systems, where SSDs, fans and USB devices draw little from those rails.
Cable Set: What You Can Actually Connect
The VIC WD is non-modular, so every cable is fixed. You get one 20+4 pin motherboard cable (500mm), one CPU cable with a 4+4 pin and an 8 pin EPS connector (650mm plus 150mm), and one PCIe cable with two 6+2 pin connectors on the same lead (500mm plus 150mm). For storage there is one cable with four SATA connectors and another with three Molex and one SATA.
The two EPS connectors on the CPU cable cover boards that ask for 8 pin plus 4 pin or 8 pin plus 8 pin CPU power. The single PCIe cable is the main limit on graphics card choice, covered in the compatibility notes below.
140mm Length for Compact Cases
At 140 x 150 x 86 mm, the VIC WD keeps to the base ATX size, and FSP positions its 140mm length as shorter than the industry norm. Many higher-wattage and modular units are longer, so in a compact mATX case or a case with a crowded PSU basement, that extra space makes it easier to tuck away the fixed cables, which matters more on a non-modular unit where unused Molex and SATA leads still have to go somewhere.
Cooling, Capacitor and Protections
Cooling comes from a 120mm fan with an HDB bearing, which FSP describes as quiet and durable. The bulk capacitor is rated for 105°C. FSP lists six protections: over voltage, short circuit, over power, under voltage, surge and inrush, and no-load operation. FSP’s spec table lists the operating temperature as 25°C, while its feature text says the unit is engineered for reliable power in temperatures up to 40°C, with its performance data measured at 25°C ambient.
Where the VIC WD Fits
Within FSP’s own lineup, the VIC WD is the entry point. The related VIC BD series steps up to 80 PLUS Bronze and ATX 3.1, and FSP’s Gold and Platinum lines add modular cables and newer GPU connectors. The VIC WD keeps the older ATX12V 2.53 standard and a basic cable set in exchange for a lower cost of entry.
Its strengths against similarly placed budget units are the single rail, the DC to DC design, the short body and a 3-year warranty from an established PSU manufacturer. The trade-offs are the entry-level efficiency tier, the non-modular cables, and a single PCIe lead that rules out power-hungry graphics cards.
Philippine Buyer Perspective
Our Take
The VIC WD is a sensible step up from the no-name power supplies sometimes bundled with budget cases. A real 550W or 650W rating from FSP, with a full protection set and a 3-year warranty, is a meaningful step up in safety for an office or school PC, even though the efficiency tier is the most basic one.
Between the two, the 650W model is the one we would point most gaming builders to. The extra 84W on +12V gives headroom for a CPU upgrade or a slightly stronger graphics card later, and the physical size and cables are identical, so you give up nothing in fit. The 550W model makes more sense for systems with integrated graphics or an entry-level graphics card, where the extra capacity would simply never be used.
If you are building around a current high-end graphics card, or you want a cleaner cable layout, this is not the right unit. Spending more on a Bronze or Gold ATX 3.1 model with modular cables and a native 12V-2×6 connector is the better call. Also keep in mind that in a non-air-conditioned room, a PSU running near its limit runs hotter and its fan spins faster, so leaving some margin between your system’s draw and the rating is good practice in a Philippine summer.
The 200-240V input is a good match for local 220V outlets, and the 80 PLUS 230V EU certification reflects testing at a voltage close to what Philippine homes and offices actually supply.
Known Compatibility and Setup Notes
Graphics card connectors (required check): the unit has one PCIe cable with two 6+2 pin connectors, and FSP does not list a 12V-2×6 or 12VHPWR connector. Cards that need three 8 pin inputs cannot be powered by it. For any card, check the card maker’s recommended PSU wattage and connector requirement before buying, and if the card uses a 12V-2×6 connector, confirm whether an adapter is included in the card’s box.
Standard (possible consideration): the VIC WD follows ATX12V 2.53 and EPS 12V 2.92, not ATX 3.x. It works with standard ATX motherboards and cases, but it is not designed around the power-excursion behavior of the newest high-end graphics cards.
CPU power (recommended check): one cable carries both a 4+4 pin and an 8 pin EPS connector. Boards that need only one CPU connector use the 4+4 pin or the 8 pin, and the other connector stays unused.
Cable management (possible consideration): all cables are fixed. Plan space for the unused Molex and SATA leads, especially in small cases without a PSU shroud.
